Checking a Relay

1.5 to 15 HP

  • Set Simpsons Ohmmeter to R x 1000
  • Connect lead on Prong 5 and Prong 2; Good reading is between 4.5 and 7.0.
  • Connect lead on Prong 2 and Prong 1; Good reading is 0.
  • To physically inspect condition of White Relay, use small standard screwdriver to pry open tabs on relay cover.   It is normal for contacts to look a little burnt but, if you see charring or smoke stains, replace the Relay.
  • It is a good rule of thumb to proactively replace the Relay any time that you have to replace a Start Capacitor that failed due to a waterlogged tank.   This will lessen the chances of a follow-up service call for the customer.
